MoDOT: Please “Bear” With Us As We Improve Your Roads
Jefferson Building Bear Glows Orange to Promote Work Zone Safety

JEFFERSON CITY - The iconic stone bear in front of the Jefferson State Office Building in Jefferson City is known for drawing oohs and aahs from kids on field trips and serving as a backdrop for tourists' snapshots.  But this week, the bear is taking on a new role:  work zone awareness.

The bear is joining more than 100 other Missouri landmarks going orange during Work Zone Awareness Week, April 19-23, including the neighboring Missouri Department of Transportation headquarters building. He is also sporting a hard hat, safety vests and a banner reminding drivers, "Don't Barrel Through Work Zones."

"We want to thank the Office of Administration for partnering with us in our effort to reduce work zone fatalities and injuries," said Don Hillis, director of system management.  "This is a unique way to remind people to drive safely in work zones."

In addition to using caution, MoDOT urges motorists to plan ahead when traveling by checking its Traveler Information Map to see where work is taking place. The map shows work zones up to a week in advance and gives the duration and level of impact.  Travelers can also rate work zones by visiting MoDOT's website, www.modot.org/workzones/comments.htm.

In 2009, 13 people were killed and 670 were injured in work zones, an increase from 2008 when 12 people were killed and 599 were injured.  Inattention, following too closely, improper lane use, driving too fast and failing to yield were the top five reasons for work zone accidents last year.

Other sites promoting work zone safety include the Six Flags Ferris wheel, the St. Louis Zoo, Unity Village in Lee's Summit, the Boone County Courthouse, the Shelter Insurance Fountain in Columbia, Hammonds Field in Springfield, the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge in Cape Girardeau, the Farm Bureau headquarters in Jefferson City and the Branson Landing.
