Five-Mile Stretch of Interstate 64 in St. Louis To Close Jan. 2
St. Louis Region Will Remain Open for Business

ST LOUIS - A key stretch of Interstate 64 in the heart of St. Louis will close for construction on Jan. 2 for a year, but all St. Louis area attractions will still be accessible.  However, the road closing may mean some extra planning if you're traveling through St. Louis in 2008 and 2009.

The Missouri Department of Transportation and its contractor, Gateway Constructors, will close I-64 from just east of Interstate 270 at Ballas Road to Interstate 170 before morning rush hour on Jan. 2.  All lanes of I-64 in this five-mile section will be closed for the entire 2008 calendar year.  In 2009, I-64 will be closed from I-170 to Kingshighway.

The I-64 reconstruction project - the largest in state history - is a $535 million project to reconstruct nearly 10 miles of I-64 from west of Spoede Road in St. Louis County to east of Kingshighway in St. Louis City.  Construction began in March 2007 and will be complete by July 2010.

"Missourians need to be aware we're closing this section of interstate so we can improve the highway and add needed lanes that will make traveling through St. Louis safer, easier and less congested," said MoDOT Director Pete Rahn.  "But we don't want to scare people away from St. Louis.  All of the region's attractions, shopping, dining and medical institutions will still be accessible.  Motorists just need to be aware of the closing and map their trip around it."

To get around St. Louis, MoDOT has created a new mapping tool called Map My Trip, which is available at http://dist6.modot.mo.gov/mapmytrip/.  When you enter your origin and destination, the mapping tool provides a map routing you around any closed ramp, interchange or section of road in St. Louis City or St. Louis County.  A drop down window lets you select many of St. Louis' major attractions and hospitals as your destination.

For more information about the project, call (314) 340-1400.  To view the construction plan or sign up to receive free weekly traffic advisories via e-mail, visit the project Web site at http://www.thenewi64.org/.
