MoDOT Using Enough Salt This Winter to Fill Mizzou Arena

JEFFERSON CITY - The amount of salt used by the Missouri Department of Transportation to fight snow and ice so far this winter is enough to fill Mizzou Arena.

Mother Nature's demand on MoDOT snowballed this winter, with the department spending more than $46 million to remove snow and ice to date. Maintenance crews have put in approximately 550,000 working hours, including 215,000 hours of overtime, keeping Missouri roads clear.

MoDOT has used nearly 320,000 tons of salt and other deicing materials so far this year - that's enough to fill Mizzou Arena in Columbia all the way to the roof! Average salt usage has been 222,550 tons over the past five years. Costs for these deicing materials have also increased, already reaching $14.6 million, compared to an average of $8.2 million over the past five years.

"For a second year in a row, MoDOT is using more resources and labor hours than usual to fight snow and ice," said MoDOT Director Pete Rahn. "Our crews are doing a tremendous job of clearing the roadways as quickly as possible whenever Missouri gets hit with a snow or ice storm. After all, it's our main priority to make sure motorists get where they're going safely."

Annually, MoDOT spends about $30 million on snow and ice removal. Last year, approximately 3,000 dedicated employees spent more than 541,000 hours fighting snow and ice at a cost of $43 million.

Any time winter weather becomes a threat, remember that MoDOT provides up-to-the-minute road conditions on its new online traveler information map at www.modot.mo.gov. The map is updated continuously through storms to show whether major roads are clear, partly covered, covered or closed.

Travelers can also call MoDOT's toll-free customer service line, 1-888-ASK-MODOT (1-888-275-6636) for the latest updates. In addition, recorded 24-hour winter road condition information is available from the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 1-800-222-6400.
