MoDOT Director Welcomes New Highways and Transportation Commissioner

JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri Department of Transportation Director Pete Rahn today welcomed Grace Nichols of St. Charles to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission.  She was appointed by Governor Matt Blunt and must be confirmed by the Missouri Senate.

"Mrs. Nichols experience as a judge, in city government and leading numerous civic initiatives will allow her to make an immediate, positive impact on the commission," Rahn said.  "I look forward to working with her to make our state's transportation system even better."

Nichols is currently a senior circuit judge for St. Charles County and previously served as Mayor of St. Charles and on the City Council.  She is Gov. Blunt's fourth appointee to the commission.

"She will join a bipartisan commission that truly works in a nonpartisan way to improve roads and bridges as well as other modes of transportation in every part of Missouri," Rahn said.

Nichols will serve a five-year term, which expires March 1, 2013.  She replaces Bill McKenna of Crystal City on the commission.

"Bill McKenna's service to the people of Missouri has been stellar," Rahn said.  "He has helped turn around negative public perceptions of MoDOT by helping to turn around a failing transportation system."

The six-member bipartisan commission governs MoDOT. The department builds and maintains the nation's seventh-largest state highway system and supports other transportation modes in Missouri. MoDOT has about 6,300 employees and an annual budget of more than $2 billion.

Other commission members are Duane Michie, chair, Caruthersville; Jim Anderson, vice-chair, Springfield; Mike Kehoe, Jefferson City; David Gach, St. Joseph; and Rudy Farber, Neosho.
