Motorists Urged Not to Travel on Some Northwest Missouri Highways

INTERSTATE 29 HAS REOPENED BUT DRIVERS ARE STILL STRONGLY URGED TO USE CAUTION AND DISCRETION.

JEFFERSON CITY -  Because of continuing heavy snowfall in northwest Missouri, the Missouri Department of Transportation is urging motorists not to travel on highways north of St. Joseph unless absolutely necessary.

MoDOT crews are out in full force plowing snow off major highways in the northwestern portion of the state.  Regardless, MoDOT says the winter weather, which is compounded by blowing winds, could make travel hazardous and suggests motorists stay put if possible until the snow stops and the roads are clear.

Drivers can find current road conditions by visiting MoDOT's Traveler Information Map at http://maps.modot.mo.gov/travelerinformation/ or by calling toll-free 888-ASK-MoDOT (888-275-6636).  The map is updated continuously when bad weather hits, and the toll-free line is answered 24/7.

If you absolutely must travel tonight or tomorrow, MoDOT reminds you to plan ahead, allow plenty of time for travel and keep safe by:

•-          Wearing seatbelts;

•-          Adjusting your speed to road and weather conditions;

•-          Placing plenty of room between your vehicle and others on the road;

•-          Avoiding using cruise control;

•-          Keeping an emergency travel kit in your vehicle; and

•-          Letting someone know the route you plan to travel and when you are expected to arrive.
