Santa Claus is Coming to Town – Please Don’t Hit Him
Reminds Motorists, “You Drink and Drive. You Lose.”

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. - Santa Claus and the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety have some advice for Missouri motorists: drive sober this holiday season and avoid stiff fines, losing your driver's license, jail time and a lump of coal in your stocking.

"Even one drink can impair your driving," says Leanna Depue, chair of the executive committee of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety. "That's why we are urging you to designate a sober driver if you're celebrating with alcohol."

Although the holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate with family and friends, it can also be a very dangerous time on Missouri roads. In 2008, from Christmas Eve through New Year's weekend, 40 fatalities occurred in traffic crashes on Missouri roads (19 involved an impaired driver) and 162 serious injuries (41 involved an impaired driver.)

You can ensure you are the life of the party though, and give the gift of a safe lift. Send a Designated Driver Gift Card and serve as the sober driver to ensure your family and friends make it home safe and avoid a DWI arrest.

The gift cards, distributed by the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, can be sent electronically at saveMOlives.com. When sent online, recipients are asked to return the favor.

Make a new year's resolution to always wear your seat belt and never drive impaired. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.

And now the Coalition offers a little Christmas carol for motorists to remember. This Christmas caroling spot is available for download at www.saveMOlives.com. Sung to the tune of Good King Wencelas:

If you want to stay alive this holiday season,

When you drink, plan not to drive, we'll tell you the reason,

You could lose your license and end up doing time,

Pay thousands of dollars too in lawyers, fees and fines.

Make a plan before you go when your head is clear,

Don't wait until you've had egg nog, hot wassail or beer.

You drink and drive. You Lose. Arrive Alive. To learn more about impaired driving or other safety programs, visit saveMOlives.com or follow us on Twitter @saveMOlives.
