White Christmas Could Make Traveling Tricky

JEFFERSON CITY - With a white Christmas forecast for most of the state, the Missouri Department of Transportation is reminding you to plan ahead before starting out on your holiday travels.

That means allowing extra time for your trip and consulting MoDOT's Traveler Information Map to get the latest road conditions.  And with snow and ice expected for a big portion of the state tonight and tomorrow, it's best to stay home if you don't absolutely have to travel.

"Christmas is one of the busiest travel days of the year, and we understand how badly people want to get where they're going so they can spend the holidays with family and friends," MoDOT Director Pete Rahn said.  "We'll do our part by having our crews out pre-treating and plowing roadways, but motorists need to take some precautions, too.  They need to slow down, be alert and be aware of what lies ahead before they start out. "

Located at http://www.modot.org/, the Traveler Information Map gives drivers an up-to-the-minute view of weather-related road conditions for major Missouri highways. Conditions for major routes across the state are color-coded to give visitors the information they need at a glance.

The map shows road conditions for major Missouri cities, counties, MoDOT districts and other travel destinations.  Individual routes can also be selected.  A text report and links to road condition maps for surrounding states are also available.

Motorists can also call MoDOT's customer service center for road conditions at 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (888-275-6636). The toll-free phone line is answered 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
