Rahn Named Vice President of National Transportation Organization, Communicator of the Year

JEFFERSON CITY - The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials has named Missouri Department of Transportation Director Pete Rahn as its vice president.  In addition, the Mid-Missouri Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America recently honored Rahn as the Communicator of the Year.

As AASHTO vice president, Rahn will serve alongside Arizona Department of Transportation Director Victor Mendez, who was elected president.  The appointment puts him in line to become AASHTO president next year, a position that will allow him to be closely involved in developing the next federal transportation bill.

"I am honored to be elected AASHTO vice president by my peers," Rahn said.  "I look forward to the opportunity to serve as a transportation advocate in this capacity, especially at a time when the nation's long-term transportation needs are at such a critical point."

AASHTO, founded in 1914, represents the state transportation departments for all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. It advocates transportation-related policies and provides technical services to support states in their efforts to efficiently and safely move people and goods.

Rahn received the Communicator of the Year award from the Mid-Missouri Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America on Nov. 2.  The chapter gives the award each year to an individual who is not a public relations professional for outstanding communication efforts.

Rahn, who assumed his position in September 2004, was credited with helping to restore credibility and accountability to the state transportation agency.  His open and honest communication style and his work to make MoDOT a more transparent agency has led to improved relationships with planning partners, legislators, the media, the public and MoDOT employees.

PRSA is the world's largest organization for public relations professionals.
