Public Hearing Scheduled for Construction of New Bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad
Highway 19 in Montgomery County

HANNIBAL - The public is invited to learn more and provide comments concerning the proposed construction of a new bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad on Highway 19 near New Florence. The open-house-style hearing will be held on Tuesday, November 5 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Montgomery County R-II High School cafeteria located at 394 North Highway 19 in Montgomery City, Missouri.

"The purpose of this improvement is to allow safer travel in the area by realigning Highway 19 and constructing a bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad," said Chris Knapp, MoDOT transportation project manager. The new bridge, featuring two 12 foot lanes and 6 foot shoulders, will allow the removal of the existing 78-year-old railroad bridge with only a 13 foot 8 inch vertical clearance.

The project, which is a priority for local officials and the Greater Montgomery County Economic Development Council, is scheduled for construction in 2015 at an estimated cost of $6 million. Partnering with Boonslick Regional Planning Commission, who previously secured $2.25 million in Community Development Block Grant funding, MoDOT's share of the cost is around $3.75 million. "Plans will be on display and property owners will be able to view how their property will be affected," Knapp explained. "We will collect comments from the public and study them for possible inclusion in the final design of the project," he added.

The public is invited to comment on the findings in person, by mail or online. At the public hearing, displays will be available, and comments and discussion are encouraged. All comments, online, in person, or mailed, will be accepted until November 20, 2013.  Those not able to attend the public meeting are encouraged to go online to the Highway 19 Virtual Meeting to review the design, images and submit comments, or they can call MoDOT customer service at 1-888 ASK MODOT (1-888-275-6636).  Maps and more information are available at www.modot.org/northeast, and then click on Montgomery County.
