Bridge Competition Offers Knowledge, Scholarships And Prizes

SIKESTON-At a time when many are learning about the condition of the nation's bridges, Southeast Missouri students will get the opportunity to learn just what makes a strong bridge.  MoDOT is sponsoring its fourth annual bridge building competition for high school juniors and seniors in its 14-county Southeast District.

Students are given a bridge kit including 20 pieces of balsa wood, a spool of thread, and a bottle of glue and must design and construct the most efficient model bridge-the lightest bridge to carry the greatest load.  The bridges will be tested at the competition on Thursday, Nov. 15 at Cape West 14 Cine in Cape Girardeau.

Cash prizes donated by the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers, Cape Girardeau Area Engineers Club, and Southeast Missouri State's Engineering & Physics Club will be awarded for first, second, and third place.  MoDOT also partnered with Arkansas State University, Southeast Missouri State University, University of Missouri-Rolla, University of Missouri-Columbia, and Southern Illinois University to offer seniors interested in civil engineering $10,000 worth of civil engineering scholarships.

New to the competition this year will be a prize to the school that competes best overall in the competition.  Any school with three or more entries will be eligible for a prize sponsored by Senator Jason Crowell.

"This is a terrific event to educate Southeast Missouri students on the importance of our transportation system and the complexities of bridge design in a fun and competitive environment," says Sen. Crowell.  "I'm happy to reward their success and look forward to seeing their designs on Nov. 15."

Students interested in participating in the competition should complete a registration form and submit it to MoDOT by Sept. 21.  Forms are available on MoDOT's website at www.modot.org/southeast and were distributed to the math, science, industrial arts teachers as well as guidance counselors at area schools.
