Operation Orange Kicks-Off Construction Season: MoDOT Raises Work Zone Safety Awareness April 19-23

Join Us at the 2010 Operation Orange Ceremony

SIKESTON- Missouri drivers are familiar with seeing lots of orange this time of year as construction season kicks-off. But in addition to its usual presence in work zones, Missourians can expect to see buildings, bridges and businesses sporting an orange glow too.

These locations are "going orange" to show their participation in the Missouri Department of Transportation's Operation Orange initiative.  Participants can either sport orange or post signs urging motorists to drive safely in work zones. Through this statewide effort, MoDOT hopes to raise awareness for work zone safety and to reduce crashes and fatalities in work zones.  Operation Orange is held in conjunction with National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 19-23).

"There is nothing more important to us than making sure people get safely through our work zones as we improve their travel and that our employees get safely home after a job well done," said MoDOT District Engineer Mark Shelton.

In addition to asking Southeast Missouri participants to "go orange," an Operation Orange Ceremony will be held Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the gazebo located on Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus near the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge. The public and media are invited to attend.

"We hope this ceremony will remind drivers that their actions behind the wheel not only affect their safety, but also the safety of our crews and contractors," said MoDOT Community Relations Manager Nicole Thieret.  "Additionally, we will honor our past crew members at this ceremony."
