Route 72 Bypass

What’s the problem? MoDOT is working to make safety improvements to Route 72. In an effort to streamline Route 72 as a key corridor between Route 67 and I-55, MoDOT is planning to make improvements including improving the alignment and increasing bridge widths. With these improvements and work underway to upgrade Route 67 to four lanes, the existing route in Fredericktown may not be equipped to handle additional traffic. There is also a need to create a more direct route for truck traffic. In additon, the county and city are hoping to improve the economic development potential for undeveloped areas near Route 67.

What’s the solution? Building a new, two-lane road around Fredericktown from the Route 72-67 intersection area on the west end to a half-mile north of Route OO on the east end.

Where does it stand now?
Preliminary plans are underway for the entire corridor.

What happens next?
• Construction begins (roundabout): Early 2008

• Construction begins (roadway grading & bridges): Early 2009

• Construction begins (roadway paving): Early 2010

What’s the estimated cost?
Approximately $8 million for construction and right-of-way purchases. Madison County is providing up to $3.3 million of the project costs.
