What Is The Problem With The Route 30/47 Intersection?
The Route 30/47 intersection is currently located along a curve and the intersection
is included on the statewide high hazard location list. The curve at the intersection
makes it difficult for Route 47 traffic to turn left onto Route 30/47. Route
47 carries the highest amount of traffic.
What Is The Problem With The Route 30/47 Bridge?
The Route 30/47 bridge over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad is on MoDOT’s "high
priority" bridge replacement list. The Route 30/47 bridge was originally built
in 1936. This aging bridge has two narrow ten-foot lanes, narrow four-foot shoulders
and is currently located on a curve. In the St. Louis metro area, MoDOT has been
making a concerted effort to designate funding toward bridge repair and reconstruction.
What Are The Proposed Solutions?
The curve at the intersection will be eliminated and left-turn lanes will be
added at all legs of the intersection. Because Route 47 has the highest traffic
volumes, the intersection will also be realigned to make Route 47 the through
movement with Route 30 intersecting the roadway. New traffic signals will be
added. The Route 30/47 bridge will be replaced and will be rebuilt with two 12-foot
lanes and two eight-foot shoulders. A third turning lane will also be added to
the bridge.
What Other Options Did MoDOT Look At?
Including the preferred option, MoDOT looked at five designs at this location.
These ranged from doing nothing to replacing the bridge at its current location.
The problems with replacing the bridge in its current location included a steep
grade approaching the bridge, not fixing the sharp curve at the intersection,
and implementing a lengthy detour route while construction was under way. MoDOT and the
mayor of St. Clair agreed that the preferred design option would ultimately
benefit the city at large in terms of safety and economic growth.
Estimated Project Cost:
Estimated construction cost to relocate the Route 30/47 intersection and replace
the
Route 30/47 bridge: $4 million
Estimated cost to purchase right of way for the project: $2 million
Current Project Timeline
